Morocco ranked 114th out of 177 countries with a score of 0.637 on the latest Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index, according to the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWP) and Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) 2023 Report.
The ranking shows progress in the sub-category of maternal health, as evidenced by an updated infant mortality statistic of 71.9 per 100 thousand live births in 2023, according to the report.
Morocco has made remarkable progress in this area in recent years. The maternal mortality rate was 71.9 per 100 thousand live births in 2023. In the security dimension, the rate of intimate partner violence in Morocco is 10% in 2023.
With respect to the education sector, the report highlighted that the average number of years of schooling for women in Morocco was 5 years in 2023, with the world average being 8.3 years. Canada and Iceland recorded the best result with an average of 13.9 years.
Morocco’s female employment rate is only 25.6%, while the world average is 53.1%. The report noted progress in women’s financial inclusion, going from 26.7% in 2017 to 32.7% in 2023. Women’s share of parliamentary seats also improved, from 18.4% in 2017 to 21.4%. % in 2023.
In terms of justice, Morocco received a score of 75.6 out of 100 in 2023, a statistic reflecting the extent of legal discrimination due to gender, and a score of 3.03 out of 4 for access to justice.
Bridging insights from gender and development with those from peace and security, the WPS Index consolidates performance across 13 indicators into a single comparable measure across countries, primarily education, perceptions of safety, parliamentary representation, maternal mortality, legal protection, and proximity to armed conflict.
