The National Office of Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE) has initiated a major water supply project for the towns of Souk Sebt Ouled Nemma, Oulad Ayad, and Dar Ould Zidouh, in the Fquih Ben Saleh province, located in central Morocco.
ONEE plans to expand the Afourer pumped storage station and the untreated water pumping plant, along with installing 60 kilometers of new pipelines, according to a statement released on Friday.
Valued at approximately MAD 134 million, the project benefits from a loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to enhance water production by 16,400 m³ per day.
The initiative will improve water supply security for these towns and their neighboring communities by 2035. It falls under the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program (PNAEPI) of 2020-2027, endorsed in January 2020.
The program addresses the water shortages caused by the decreasing groundwater levels and reduced precipitation in recent years while benefiting approximately 100,000 residents and contributing to the regional socio-economic development.
