President Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic has expressed his country’s firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and announced plans to open a consulate in the city of Dakhla.
The announcement from the Dominican’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs follows a high-level meeting between President Abinader and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
During the meeting, which took place at the National Palace in Santo Domingo, President Abinader emphasized “the Dominican Republic’s alignment with Morocco’s position on the Sahara dispute.”
“We consider Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only solution to the Sahara issue,” President Abinader stated.
The discussions took place on the sidelines of President Abinader’s investiture ceremony, where Minister Bourita represented King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
Bourita conveyed King Mohammed VI’s congratulations to President Abinader on his re-election and extended the Moroccan monarch’s best wishes for success in his new term.
Minister Bourita also delivered an invitation from King Mohammed VI, inviting President Abinader to make an official visit to Morocco.
The potential visit would further deepen bilateral relations across various sectors, according to the ministry’s statement.
In response to the invitation, President Abinader expressed his willingness to enhance collaboration between the Dominican Republic and Morocco in all areas of mutual interest.
He affirmed his intention to accept the King’s invitation and stressed the importance of fostering closer ties between the two nations.
