Algerian media and local political organizations have jumped to blame Morocco for inciting riots during a football match at Algiers’ Ali La Pointe Stadium.
The match, between Mouloudia Algeria and Tunisia’s US Monastir in the African Champions League, saw violent clashes and vandalism, resulting in the tragic death of an Algerian fan.
Videos circulated on social media showed fans clashing with security forces, leading to accusations against Morocco.
Al-Chorouk, a newspaper with close ties to Algerian authorities, alleged that the violence was part of a “plot targeting Algeria,” further insinuating Morocco’s involvement.
The paper claimed the riots were a failed attempt to exploit Mouloudia’s fanbase in an attempt to tarnish Algeria’s image.
The newspaper further accused “Rashad’s terrorist networks” and Moroccan state actors of diverting attention from Morocco’s own “internal scandals.”
The outlet warned Mouloudia fans to stay vigilant to protect the club’s reputation as it competes for the African championship title.
The National Construction Movement, an Algerian political party, also condemned what it called Morocco’s “propaganda campaign.”
