Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reiterated on Sunday Morocco’s call for Algeria to participate in the ongoing round table discussions regarding the future of the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking during a meeting at the United Nations in New York, Bourita said that the round table discussions should involve all parties, including Algeria, and that they are the “sole” framework for addressing the issue in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2703 dated October 30, 2023.
Held on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, the round table talks## were initiated at the request of Staffan De Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Moroccan Sahara.
Omar Hilale, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations participated in the discussions.
In his address, Bourita outlined four key principles of Morocco’s policy on the Sahara, reaffirming the country’s commitment to supporting the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in pursuing a political solution that is realistic, pragmatic, and durable.
The Moroccan delegation asserted that autonomy, under Morocco’s sovereignty, is the only viable resolution to the regional dispute.
In addition, the delegation members stressed the importance of strict adherence to the ceasefire by all parties involved as a prerequisite for the continuation of the political process.
