Iran launched missiles toward Israel on Tuesday, prompting air raid sirens to sound across the country, according to CNN.
CNN reporters in various locations observed dozens of missiles flying overhead, with some intercepted by Israel’s air defense systems, though the exact number is unclear.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated the attack was in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others.
Following the missile launch, Iran’s UN mission claimed the strikes were a response to “the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime,” warning that any further Israeli actions would trigger a “crushing response.”
Earlier in the day, the White House had warned that Iran was preparing for a missile attack on Israel, heightening fears of a broader conflict in the region. Residents in Tel Aviv and other cities were urged to stay close to shelters as tensions escalated.
“A direct military attack from Iran against Israel will carry severe consequences for Iran,” a senior White House official said in a statement. A senior official warned that an attack from Iran would have severe consequences for the country.
Israel assessed that the attacks might target three Israeli air bases and an intelligence base near Tel Aviv. As a precaution, the intelligence base in Glilot was evacuated, and the Israeli military implemented safety plans for personnel at these locations. The U.S. had indicated that the attack could happen within the next 12 hours.
President Biden has held a meeting with Vice President Harris and top national security officials to address the situation and coordinate U.S. support for Israel.
Amid escalating tensions, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called on citizens to unite and adhere to safety directives. He asserted that Israel is engaged in a campaign against what he referred to as Iran’s “axis of evil.”
Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that “the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to Israel’s defense.” Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Israel instructed all personnel and their families to shelter in place due to the ongoing security concerns.
