Morocco’s National Police (DGSN) and customs officials at the El Guerguerat border crossing with Mauritania, south of the city of Dakhla, foiled an international drug smuggling operation on Tuesday and seized 37.635 kg of cocaine headed to Morocco from abroad.
Vigilant border surveillance and meticulous inspection led to the discovery of the concealed narcotics, comprising 36 blocks carefully hidden in an international cargo truck bearing a Moroccan license plate carrying dried fruits, according to a security source.
The truck arrived at the El Guerguerat border crossing from a sub-Saharan African country.
The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Moroccan man, was apprehended during the smuggling attempt.
The suspect was remanded into police custody pending further investigation, under the supervision of the public prosecutor’s office.
