The new University Hospital (CHU) in Laayoune in southern Morocco is projected to be completed by the end of 2025, Morocco’s Minister of Health Khalid Ait Taleb said during his visit to the site on Tuesday.
Upon full completion, the hospital will cover 180,000 square meters, including 95,000 square meters for built-out space, for an estimated cost of 1.2 billion MAD.
The five-floor facility will include 500 beds and specialized services such as a maternity and child healthcare unit, a medical-surgical department, and a day hospital. It will also house an emergency department, an intensive care unit, an operating theater, an obstetric unit, and a psychiatric hospital.
Ait Taleb noted that “the construction is moving quickly, with all contractors focused on finishing the project.” “The hospital will serve as an important medical center for the southern regions of Morocco,” he said.
The project “is part of a broader effort to improve healthcare in Morocco’s southern provinces and will be staffed with qualified professionals to enhance health services.”
“The Laayoune CHU will draw health workers from sub-Saharan Africa as part of a South-South cooperation initiative,” said Ait Taleb.
Belkhir El Assri representing the Laayoune-Oued Eddahab Regional Directorate of the National Agency for Public Equipment (ANEP) stated that the construction project is currently 65% complete.
The hospital will also serve as a training site for students from the city’s Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy.
