The United States reiterated its support on Tuesday for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, as the solution to the regional dispute over the territory, Morocco’s Foreign Ministry stated in a press release.
The affirmation followed discussions in Washington between Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, yesterday.
“The United States continues to view Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as serious, credible, realistic, and one potential approach to satisfy the aspirations of the people of Western Sahara,” US State of Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said in a press release.
Both diplomats reaffirmed support for “the UN Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, and his efforts to advance negotiations leading to an enduring and dignified political solution, without further delay.”
During the meeting, Blinken and Bourita also addressed the current regional conflicts in the Middle East and discussed methods to enhance the partnership between the two countries.
Secretary Blinken expressed appreciation for King Mohamed VI’s contributions to regional peace and acknowledged Morocco’s leadership in humanitarian aid to Gaza and stabilization efforts in the West Bank, as well as in Libya and the Sahel.
