Qatar reiterated on Monday its strong support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, describing the initiative as a “constructive” and “objective” basis for resolving the long-standing regional dispute.
Speaking at the United Nations, Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s representative, backed Morocco’s proposal as the best path to a realistic and sustainable solution.
Addressing the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, Al-Thani noted Qatar’s support for the UN-led efforts to reach a political solution, explaining that any agreement must respect Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He referenced the importance of adhering to UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2703.
The diplomat also acknowledged the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, saying “he is hopeful for a definitive and lasting resolution” that would lead to international peace.
