As France pursues a strategy to bolster Morocco’s green energy capabilities and strengthen ties with the kingdom after a diplomatic rift that has lasted nearly two years, France plans to invest in a 3-gigawatt power cable that will link Morocco’s cities of Dakhla and Casablanca.
The multi-billion-dollar initiative would deliver renewable energy across Morocco. While France’s Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire announced the project during an official visit to Rabat in April, on the heels of France’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in July, Le Maire said, “France is ready to participate in funding this project.”
The power cable is part of Morocco’s long-standing development plan for Dakhla, including a new port that’s been in the works since 2010, that would enhance Morocco’s regional influence and facilitate the transportation of resources.
