Following France’s recent recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and President Emmanuel Macron’s current three-day visit to Morocco, the full map of Morocco that includes the Sahara region was published on the official website of the French Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday.
The President firmly stated on Tuesday in his speech addressing Morocco’s Parliament two Houses that “for France, the present and future of the Sahara lie within Morocco’s sovereignty.”
He highlighted that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue should be resolved,” and Morocco’s 2007 autonomy plan is “the only viable basis for a fair, durable, and negotiated political solution,” under the United Nations Security Council’s resolutions.
This reflects France’s new position on the Sahara issue and aligns with the international momentum surrounding Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory.
France officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara on Throne Day in July.
The recognition followed several countries acknowledging Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, led by the United States as part of the Abraham Accords in December 2020.
