Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Monday a further EUR 3.76 billion (USD 4.01 billion) aid allocation to support the reconstruction of the Valencia region, devastated by storm DANA last month which caused the deadliest flash floods in Spain’s history.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains starting on October 29, have resulted in more than 220 deaths and significant damage, Reuters reported.
The additional funding will supplement the EUR 10.6 billion in aid announced last week. “There are still streets to be cleaned, there are garages to be drained, there are many infrastructures to be repaired, and, above all, many lives, many homes, and many businesses to be restored to normal,” Sanchez told the media.
The new package includes measures to support rental households, a 500 million euro mud removal fund, and 200 million euros to assist farmers affected by the floods.
The PM also unveiled an extension of mortgage relief for vulnerable families, extending the one-year moratorium by a further 12 months.
The government has pledged to provide 150 homes to affected families and has earmarked EUR 25 million for the purchase of properties in or near the disaster-stricken areas.
